when it's springtime in the rockies...

...you can be grateful that at least your kids really like snow -

and shoveling, oddly enough! they would not be persuaded that the snow would actually melt without needing to be shoveled by the next day at the latest. Lainey even asked if we could go on a walk around our neighborhood, "with our shovels!" My apologies to my neighbors...I talked her out of it. Inevitably that little adventure would have ended with me carrying three shovels, two kids, and some random assortment of unnecessary objects picked up along the way.

Laine was on a quest for the perfect snow angel, always pointing to the middle of some untouched patch of snow, asking me to help her make a snow angel there, and then being terribly upset by all the footprints in and out again. could we have a little perfectionist on our hands here?

even with happy snow kids (pre-frozen hands and snow angel fury, of course) it was hard not to wish we were back in Hawaii in all of this springtime snow! okay, I'll be honest. I've been wishing we were back in Hawaii since the minute our plane left Honolulu.

before we left to come back home, Laine asked in complete seriousness if we could maybe move to Hawaii when it was time to think about moving, and Romney chimed in, suggesting that Jim could find work as a surfer. it might actually work, as long as he had a little sidekick of a hula girl!

for romney, this trip provided opportunities to sleep in lots of exquisite new places, at least when he wasn't climbing up and jumping off of them (this was the view from our porch, by the way.)

for laine, this trip was non-stop fun, love, and attention from the best of aunts and uncles with amazing reserves of energy and patience. the trip did also happen to include a swimming pool, some really fun beaches with great waves to splash in, sea turtle and humpback whale spotting, tide pool exploring, a visit to an aquarium, and the ever-popular flower leis.

what more could a girl want? a gorgeous WEDDING was the icing on the cake, complete with fancy dresses, incredible flowers, and the happiest ben and dana we've ever seen. hooray! what a couple! what a wedding! what a vacation! how about taking us along on your anniversary next year, too?

getting warmer.....

well, it seems like it may be time to start phasing out all the winter pictures and start moving towards warmer climates. We jump started that this week with a trip to Hawaii for Marie's brother's wedding and it was awesome....but you are going to have to wait to hear from Marie for the low down on that.

I read someone else's blog (thanks mike and jamie!) yesterday who had been "tagged." I've been tagged before and completely ignored it because it asked a lot of deep questions that required thoughtful responses and I'm just not a thoughtful person unfortunately. So I'm going to tag some folks here and I may be completely scorned and that would only be fair. This tagging however involves no deep thoughts and therefore appeals to me. It only invovles ipods and music and that is of great interest to me. It is really hard not to cheat and I'm going to do my best. Here is the deal - hit "shuffle songs" on your ipod and list the first 10 songs that come up.

here are mine:
1 - living loving maid, Led Zepplin
2 - life got in the way, Sister Hazel
3 - every time you say goodbye, Allison Krauss and Union Station
4 - everybody knows, Ryan Adams
5 - the little things, Colbie Caillat
6 - leaving on a jet plane, Peter Paul and Mary
7 - gone, Ben Folds
8 - happy in the country, Crash Test Dummies
9 - real world, Matchbox Twenty
10 - a page is turned, Bebo Norman

only cheated once. I didn't like song number 9 so I skipped it (kurt bestor theme from the book of mormon soundtrack - good song but not for this purpose) but that is the benefit I have from not actually having been tagged. I do want to tag a few others however and I figured I needed to put down my list so you would share yours. You can either reply on your blog or in the comments but if on your blog be sure to let us all know in the comments so we can go see it.
songs 10-15 were pretty cool too but I'll spare you on listing them as well.

So I will now tag:
Catherine (the only one with full rights to reject me since I rejected her tag)
Jane
Collette
Meghan
Jer
Ryan (yes - you can use your Zune instead)
Jon
Shane and/or Elisa

(actually I'm pretty sure that is everyone that reads this!)

Happy Easter!!!

Yurts, Moose, Puppies, and Hurricanes

Well, we seem to be on a two week lag here at the Jackson household. We had a really fun weekend two weeks ago when we hiked up to a yurt at the top of Millcreek canyon. We started late Friday afternoon and thought - 4.5 miles - that is an hour or two, no problem! We dropped off the kids and grandma's and papa's house (THANKS!) and headed up the canyon. We strapped on our snow shoes and we were off. The sun was bright, we played 20 questions and dragged our gear behind us on sleds. It was a perfect day and we were having a great time. However, when we hit the two mile marker after about an hour and half, we realized we were not even halfway. At this rate, it would be dark before we got there and we decided we needed to speed it up! The only problem was that we were beat. It is a pretty steep climb and it turns out we are pretty weak people.

We did see two moose on the way and that was pretty cool. One was only a silhouette in the moon light. Final trip time for Marie and I was about three and half hours (and 2 hours in the dark) and the final members of our group got there about 45 minutes later. It was really a pretty brutal climb, but that did not deter our enthusiasm! The yurt was awesome. Complete with bunk beds, table, wood burning stove and gassed up lanterns. We finally got the place warmed up, had delicious foil dinners, and hit the sack.

Marv cooked a killer morning breakfast on top of the wood stove and we had a fun morning listening to Jane complain about how loud the rest of us snore. (side note- totally true - the other 5 of us either took turns snoring or tried to create a snoring symphony pretty much all night. Sorry Jane!)

About 15 minutes into our hike out the next morning we met a moose. Now meeting a moose in the wild is usually a pretty cool thing. (normal reaction - hey check out that moose! cool!) This time was different. This moose was in the middle of the trail and wouldn't move. It also had one bad leg and I'm pretty sure no one made her a yummy breakfast on a wood burning stove that morning because it was NOT happy. We tried to scare it away and make a lot of noise but because of its bad leg it was not interested in getting off the road, and into the deep snow. The moose used its body language to make it clear how it felt about us and our happy moods. It became abundantly clear that we needed to find another route. Jane ventured out first commando style (below in the blue) through the deep snow and trees and I wish I had a good picture of it but I didn't have time because it wasn't long before the moose really started to make its threating gestures. Eventually we all followed and after about 30 minutes of moose adventure we were finally beyonds its grasp and trampling hooves. yikes. Once we were all below it, the moose turned around and strolled back up the path and I presume was going to check out the yurt for any foil dinner leftovers. Below you can see how close we came and how we hid behind trees hoping to save our lives.

The yurt adventure was awesome and inspired lots of ideas for future family camping (like lets go somewhere a lot closer than 4.5 miles.) Thanks to Catherine Hansen (aka CJ) for making it all happen!

Other recent highlights:
Welcome home David! It is just like having your long lost faithful puppy back at your side. (returned this week from the Brazil, Fortaleza mission)

Yesterday I also had the chance to go skiing with Lainey. Holy cow. Once Lainey hits the slopes she is a girl possessed. Seriously, talk about ski school happiness. It was so fun to be out with her and realize how good she has gotten. She said her goal of the day was to ski from the top of the mountain all the way to the bottom. So we ventured up two new lifts and sure enough, she skied top to bottom all by herself. It is exciting after years of worry to see that one of your children is going to like something as much as you do! By the end of the day it had started dumping snow, I couldn't see a thing and I was begging her to leave because I was freezing. She didn't notice and just kept asking for one more run. Gotta love that.

Just so he doesn't feel left out here is a picture of Romney doing his best Elton John impression.

here is a 22 second video of the Hurricane shooshing down the slopes. She is perfectly capable of stopping anywhere she wants, but you'll notice she doesn't care that she is leaving me in the dust and just keeps on going.

ski school happiness

well, maybe I should clarify. laine being in ski school made me really happy. (notice how big my smile is compared to hers. partly the goggles obstruct her smiling ability...but still. I'm SO excited. and she's just plain excited.) in fairness, she had to do all of the scary and unknown parts of the outing, and I just get to enjoy the benefits! she was awesome, though. she skied through some very cold weather and serious snow, and was such a trooper. I'm hoping that she'll just think that's what it's like when we ski - so we can go in any kind of weather!

we got in on this awesome ski school program and got 4 days of ski school for a total bargain, and now laine can ski all the way down sunnyside unassisted! it is almost impossible to describe how happy that makes me! but it's a lot lot lot. and even better was that I didn't have to fight with her about it! I tried taking her down a few times on my own and got nothing but grief, so I was more than happy to pass the teaching to someone else!

we did manage to schedule our ski school days on three serious snow days so it took us some time to get up the canyon (many thanks to flexible baby-sitters on a couple of those days!) and that was no fun. but once we got there...it was all beautiful. her highlight was riding on the magic carpet (the little surface tow), and mine was watching her improve improve improve to the point of just attacking that hill on her last run. another highlight was having catherine come up and join us for the very end of one of our days. laine thought that was pretty special.

I had fun giving Romney his first exposure to the big mountain too, by way of the trusty backpack and the rope tow. he loved it once he had his own goggles, and especially if we were pretending to be airplanes. and it turns out that everything is better if there's the promise of hot chocolate at the end - with marshmallows, of course!
