a wombat celebration

well, he turned three.
I don't know how it happened. and suddenly he looks older too. he was a little hesitant to actually become three, when it came right down to it, but in the end, he warmed up to the whole idea. I'll admit, there was a minute when I was wishing right along with him that he could just stay two - my sweet little two year old boy. but in the end, it only took about a day to get past this conversation:

me: what day is today?
rom: my birthday!
me: how old are you?
rom: TWO. I two.
me: but it's your birthday...that means you're three now!
rom: NO mommy. I two. I not three, I two.

we actually had a little reprise of this conversation today, when we were talking about another little boy. Rom asked me if he was a baby, and I said, no, he's just two. "Just like me! I'm two!" he said. "No, remember how you had your birthday? and now you're three?" so he said, "Mommy, when will I be two again?" and I had to tell him that he wouldn't ever be two again, and you should have seen his little lip poke out and start to quiver while his eyes filled up with tears. true curtis change-averse style. but luckily at this age, he still feels better really quickly with a hug. may that last a long while.
so anyway. we made celebratory chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast (I love getting to start out the day with dessert...) and then we had a fun hike with friends, lunch with the kingfish (we almost ran into a snag here - no rootbeer. but it turns out he likes horchata just as well. he's my boy!) and just generally tried to keep the peace until Saturday, the day of presents. incidentally, I would like to say it was purely coincidental that his day was full of things that I really like.

Saturday we went bowling with family (rom's choice!), opened presents, ate cake, etc. and you've never seen a happier birthday boy. spinning around on the slippery bowling floor and just generally loving life.
can you believe even Lainey got some attention? fun fun day. thanks everyone for coming!
happy birthday to the wombat! I love this boy!

it's true, that was a sad moment when he would never be two again. he is so tender, I can't believe it. what a sweetie. I remember crying with cath because we didn't want to grow up, the only consolation is that rom gets cuter and more fun every year.

yes, although that will stop Jane. (please see my post on awkwardness for more.) Eventually we all stop getting cuter and cuter every year...and we get--well, not cuter. some of us get cuter and funnerer.
